There are many different theories that describe our universe in respective areas. General relativity describes gravity as the curvature of spacetime, caused by mass and energy. Quantum mechanics deals with the behavior of very small particles, via concepts like uncertainty and wave-particle duality. String theory replaces the point-like particles by one-dimensional vibrating strings, which are building blocks of everything in our Universe. Each of these theories works very well in their own domain. However, these theories may be manifestations of a more fundamental concept, known as symmetry. In essence, these prevailing theories might just be consequences of the inherent symmetry embedded in our universe.
