Running Alone Through the Capital of North Korea 🇰🇵

I signed up for the Pyongyang International Marathon to be part of the first group of "athletes" allowed into North Korea after the borders slammed shut five years ago.

For the past six years, I’ve dedicated myself to learning Korea’s history—both North and South—which has earned me several awards and the title of Honorary Citizen of Seoul. But my curiosity doesn’t stop at the DMZ. I wanted to go beyond the border, to meet North Koreans face-to-face, speak with them in Korean (as best I could), and see the people behind the regime.

This was actually my second visit to North Korea—my last trip was in December 2018, just months before the borders closed. But this time, it felt different. With my background—living in South Korea, married to a South Korean, and having made videos with North Korean defectors—I honestly wasn’t sure if they'd even let me in. And if they did, how would they react to me?

This is the second video, where I run the 31st Pyongyang International Marathon—racing through the streets of Pyongyang, starting and finishing at Kim Il-sung Stadium, cheered on by 50,000 North Koreans. It was, to say the least, surreal. But it was also a breath of fresh air, running alone at times through the streets, with Pyongyangites along the road cheering us (amateur) athletes on. We ended the day with a visit to the Pyongyang Central Zoo. Enjoy!

제가 평양국제마라톤을 신청한 이유는, 국경이 닫힌 지 5년 만에 처음으로 북한 입국이 허용된 ‘선수’ 그룹에 포함되기 위해서였습니다.

남과 북, 한반도의 역사를 지난 6년간 꾸준히 공부해 왔고, 그 노력 덕분에 몇몇 상을 수상하고 서울시 명예시민이라는 칭호도 받게 되었습니다. 하지만 저의 호기심은 DMZ에서 멈추지 않았습니다. 국경 너머 북한 사람들을 직접 만나고, 한국어로 이야기 나누며, 체제 뒤에 있는 ‘사람들’을 직접 보고 싶었습니다.

이번이 북한 방문은 두 번째였습니다. 처음 방문은 2018년 12월, 국경이 닫히기 직전이었죠. 하지만 이번에는 모든 것이 달랐습니다.
한국에 거주하고 있고, 한국인 배우자가 있으며, 탈북민들과도 콘텐츠를 만들어온 저의 배경 때문에 입국 자체가 불가능할 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 만약 들어간다 해도, 북한 측이 저를 어떻게 받아들일지 알 수 없었죠.

이번 영상은 제가 제31회 평양 국제마라톤 대회에 참가해 평양 시내를 달리는 모습을 담은 두 번째 영상입니다. 김일성경기장에서 출발해 다시 그곳으로 돌아오는 코스로, 5만 명의 북한 관중들의 환호를 받으며 달린 경험은 정말 비현실적이었습니다. 때때로 혼자 평양 거리 위를 달리며 시민들의 응원을 받는 순간들은 마치 숨통이 트이는 듯한 기분을 안겨주기도 했습니다. 하루를 마무리하며 평양중앙동물원도 방문했습니다. 재미있게 봐주세요!
