Syphilis is an STI (sexually transmitted infection) caused by the bacterium treponema pallidum. Syphilis can progress through four stages: primary syphilis, secondary syphilis, latent syphilis, and tertiary syphilis.
Syphilis symptoms can vary depending on the stage. In the primary stage, chancres may develop as soon as 3 weeks after exposure.
Syphilis is curable via treatment with the appropriate antibiotics.
