Los Angeles LIVE: National Guard Faces off with Protesters Hours After Arriving in LA on Trump's Orders | CNBC TV18
Live from Downtown LA, near federal building. Live on the ground in Los Angeles as National Guard troops arrive in Los Angeles on orders from President Trump in response to immigration raid protests. Trump announced he is deploying 2,000 California National Guard troops to Los Angeles over the objections of Gov. Gavin Newsom after a second day of clashes between hundreds of protesters and federal immigration authorities in riot gear.
President Donald Trump said Sunday he was not prepared at this time to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 to respond to protests in the Los Angeles area as he deployed 2,000 National Guard members to the region, a move the state’s governor condemned as “purposefully inflammatory.”
Asked whether he was prepared to invoke the law, which grants presidents authority to deploy US military domestically, Trump told reporters in New Jersey it “depends whether or not there is an insurrection.”
Pressed on whether he believed there was one happening in Los Angeles, he said, “No, but you have violent people, and we’re not going to let them get away with it,” pressing the importance of “very strong law and order.”
About 300 National Guardsmen are deployed at three locations around Los Angeles, the California governor’s office said this morning. It follows a presidential memorandum signed by President Donald Trump sending 2,000 National Guardsmen to disperse protests sparked by immigration raids.
Immigration crackdown: Immigration authorities and demonstrators have clashed for two days in the Los Angeles area, with unrest beginning Friday after dozens of people were detained by federal immigration agents across different locations.
Trump and Newsom: California Gov. Gavin Newsom called Trump on Friday, and they spoke for approximately 40 minutes, according to the governor’s office. Trump has claimed, without evidence, that he was forced to step in because California Democratic officials, including Newsom, were incapable of stopping the protests themselves.
