Glass is denser than air and therefore has a higher refractive index. When light propagates in a glass tube or fiber and and hits its surface at a small enough angle, it gets reflected back into glass, even though both glass and air are transparent for light. This effect is called total internal reflection. This is why we can use optical glass fibers to send information encoded in modulated light over thousands of kilometers. This effect is also used in binoculars and many other optical instruments and devices.
