@kasperk679

fun fact: the (n)odachi almost never got unsheated by the wearer alone (as seen in the video). most of the times the samurai had a weapon carrier with him, called a Kosho, a servant that helped the wearer to unsheathe the (n)odachi. after the sword was pulled from the sheathe, the koshō leaved the battlefield and waited on a "safer place"

One correction - the oodachi/nodachi didn't appear as a counter to spears, since spears weren't used often at the beginning of the 14th c. It countered cavalry, and was also more durable than a naginata glaive, since it was entirely from steel, while the blade of the naginata could break off from the wooden shaft. It was also good for bludgeoning enemy foot soldiers by hitting them on the head. My sources - Kondo Yoshikazu, Higuchi Takaharu, Sasama Yoshihiko, Thomas Conlan.

There were two types of Odachi:
The Odachi
And the Nodachi
Both were very big swords, but one was used differently than the other.
The Nodachi was used on the battlefield, most commonly on horseback to cut down large hordes at high speeds.
The Odachi, was more of a status symbol. If a samurai had nicer armor, bigger swords, more swords, and a lot of rich men by his side, people could immediately see that he was something like a rich Daimyō or other rich samurai.
Another difference between the Odachi and the Nodachi: The Nodachi was slightly shorter than the Odachi, since samurai should be able to draw it from their saya.

Here’s a tip if you have trouble putting it back in: Throw the sword upwards and then catch it with the scabbard when it comes back down.
Looks stylish too, in case anyone is still alive after you’re done.

I found one of these in a shop like 20 years ago, still no regrets on my purchase. Got it at a discount too because the sheath was cracked despite it actually being a full tang sword and not a cheaply made knockoff.
