My first playthrough of Panzer Dragoon Saga literally changed my outlook on JRPGs. I expected some over hyped overly expensive title but I got a truly original and one of a kind experience. I could not recommend the game enough.
I'm loving this series, you've quickly become my new favorite channel. Keep up the great work!
I grew up with Shining Wisdom, I really like it. I beat it recently again. I've beaten the working designs translation and the PAL translation. With all my experience I never contemplated the title of the game. haha. Thanks for being so easy on games. It sets you apart for sure. Keep giving people a reason to play these games.
i can see your channel growing bud keep up the great work!!
Something further connecting Albert Odyssey to the SNES aesthetic is that the series was originally a Super Famicom SRPG series, and Legend of Eldean is a spinoff in a party-based JRPG style.
Been looking forward to this one!
Love love love your humorous asides๐๐๐ I've always wanted to play Shining Wisdom, Albert Odyssey, and Rayearth! Great video as always!
Thanks for putting this list together. It was definitely worth the wait. Appreciate the heads up to keep an eye out for it. Keep up the great work!
Plenty of Sega Saturn RPGs as long as you include the Japanese games Iโve been around for 5 decades of gaming what a life
Some Dragon Force beginner tips to make it make more sense. 1.) Each army type has a troop type it's good at, it slaughters, it's bad against, and gets slaughtered by. Monks obliterate zombies, Archers obliterate Harpy's, Samurai obliterate dragons, mages obliterate beasts .etc look up the manual or guide to see the combinations in their entirety. 2.) in battles, tactical use of formations, commands, and specials will make a large difference, but the most basic is that troops who are standing still do more damage than troops who are actively attacking. Choose offense formation so some troops remain to protect your general. Advance toward the enemy and just before your troops class change to standby so they stop. They should deal great damage against the enemy army. 3.) in the castle menu part, generals with high intelligence can search for items at whatever castle they're stationed at. At every menu be sure to exhaust their searches as they will find useful things. Make sure to equip all items too. Hope these basic tips can make DF make more sense
Great video! The Sega Saturn has always been rather dear to me. I ended up getting a copy of Dragon Force back in 96 when my Dad accidently broke my Children of the Atom game, just taking it out of the case. So, I was able to exchange it at Toys R Us, but as it turned out, they had no more copies of Children of the Atom in stock. I ended up picking Dragon Force, having known absolutely nothing about it. The cover art just looked bad ass. To this day, it remains my favorite game of all time. The replay value of that game is insane. I hope you get the opportunity to play it through to completion. Once the battle mechanics click, it's a truly remarkable experience. ๐ป
Excited for this one. Can't wait to see how much we get to talk about Working Designs, haha. Watching you has made me realize that I do like the games that WD has brought over, but I had never beat any outside of Lunar. They really loved making games their own things, and I have found myself enjoying them a lot more with unworking design patches/modern rereleases. Would I have played the Vay steam port if I hadn't played it way back when? Who knows. But glad to have the memories and glad to have these more faithful versions!
Always so pumped when one of these releases!
For dragon force I can give a few tips. Some army troops are more effective at fighting others. In general, dragons are the best, and archers are generally considered the worst. Look up a troop effectiveness chart to get a better idea. When in battle, using "offense" is usually good. You can send the front to advance and keep troops behind to defend your commander. Using standby right before the enemy troops hit yours usually is good too, because defenders get something like a "first strike". You can usually very easily wipe out enemy armies this way. For the main map, before you can make any serious push into another kingdom you prob want to spend time giving each of your commanders battle time so you get awards. Those awards can be used to give your commanders more troops. Spread your commanders battles around, try to give each of them at least one encounter per session so you can get awards quickly. Once you have several commanders at about 50 troops strong you prob have enough to venture out and start making a serious push on the other kingdoms There's a lot more than this but these tips should get you off to a good start in battle and over world conquest. Then experience the story from there.
If Shining Wisdom was included on this list (since it is not an RPG, more of a Zelda-like adventure), I'm not sure why Legend of Oasis was omitted, since it is the same genre of game but much better in almost every way.
Okay. Some Tips for Dragon Force: 1. Standby always has the advantage against any charge tactic and the AI does not know this. They will even sometimes lose battles where they have the numbers to handily win. 2. Archers/Mages suck against just about every unit but they are good for mopping up against small/diminished numbers because having the advantage in unit matchup does not matter if they die halfway across the battlefield. 3. Rule of 5 (generals): 5 to invade an opposing castle, 5 to defend a castle and you have to take and an extra 5 for a front line castle that is being invaded frequently.
Albert Odyssey was, cruelly, the first rpg I ever played. I was engrossed! It was the perfect game for the summer in my middle school years. Great job with this video. It was fun to watch and recall all those games. And I agree with everyone else, Shining in the Holy Ark needs some attention.
The video ive been waiting for. Tagging for future comment after watching. Your missing: Shining in the Holy Ark Mystaria/Blazing Heroes Dark Savior Legend of Oasis Virtual Hydlyde Guardian Heroes Wizardry lylgamyn Saga (This counts as english as it comes available in english in the japanese copy) Shining in the Holy Ark is a top 3 game on the system.
My personal favorite RPGs on the system are Dragon Force and Shining the Holy Ark. Another game that I really enjoyed, while not an RPG, but is an arena fighter with some light RPG progression mechanics, is Robo Pit.
