Spongebob is known to be involved in reenactments of past war time; and some of his discipline comes from working for Mr. Krabs; the only real war he had ever been in is based on protecting the secret of the Krabby Patty from Plankton, so apart from Plankton, he is not really known to be a veteran, not to mention the fact that Spongebob is more like a boy scout than a serious veteran(No true veteran soldier has that high level of optimism and enthusiasm that Spongebob has; any soldier can be kind and friendly but not too overly optimistic or anywhere near as enthusiastic like Spongebob). Optimism that is paired with enthusiasm are much more common with young boy scouts. There are a couple of episodes of Spongebob Squarepants that shows us the inside of his closet that all the real clothing he possesses is his work clothes; the uniform we have seen him in some episodes was probably just either a costume or something he got from being a boy scout(There are some boy scout groups that do dress up like somebody who was from a boot camp).

it’s funny how many ways characters can be read, I had picked up on almost all the same traits as you but in my mind they pointed to autism, your theory makes a lot of sense to me too as PTSD is an acquired neurodivergence which has lots of external overlap with autism and to a lesser extent adhd. Could also be both, nothing saying we can’t have autistic ex soldier spongebob

You know it’s more likely that almost all the other characters (excluding Squidward, Sandy, and SpongeBob) were part of some war and SpongeBob just picked up his military traits from his parents while Sandy is some sort of spy/ambassador as suggested. Squidward is probably old enough to be part of whatever war happened but it’s more likely he dodged the draft or something like that

It's too many holes. Like his pet snail he got himself. I believe SpongeBob is too kind hearted for any kinda battle. I mean the guy slipped on a ice cube and got hurt. As a cartoon character he can be anything he wants too be. As in one episode he actually leaves the krusty krab to become a chef in a tournament. I could say that SpongeBob work in the military but nothing says that about him. As in reality their are people who are just prepared nothing about that screams they were or are in the military.
