To really understand the story in Taemin's "Criminal" MV you have to follow the story in all of the MVs from this album. "Criminal" is part of his 3rd Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. "Idea" is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle. And just so you know, Taemin is not the criminal in the song. He is being held captive by the criminal who is the girl he is singing about (i.e. the pressure he feels under as a Kpop idol). The song is about living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed by the girl to the point where you are suffering from stockholm syndrome and you have now fallen in love with the person (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is inflicting all the pain and suffering on you. Even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself with the need to always be the best in everything he does) you can't help but love them and allow them to continue to hurt you, etc. Taemin has devoted his entire life to become known as the best of the best. He started as a trainee when he was around 11 years old and he debuted as the main dancer of SHINee, a 5 member Kpop group, in 2008 when he was 14 years old. He then became known as one of the most popular and successful solo artists when he had his solo debut in 2014 at the age of 21. Next, he debuted for a third time last year as a member of the industry's very first supergroup SuperM, which is made up of the best singers, dancers, rappers and performers under SM Entertainment. Taemin's talents are never ending. And he is only one small part of what makes SHINee such legends. SHINee is set to make their comeback in the first part of next year as the other members have now completed their military service. If you really want to understand what makes Taemin so special, you have to check out his group SHINee and experience one of the most highly respected and talented Kpop groups in the industry. SHINee are unmatched and all other Kpop groups look up to them. If you are impressed with Taemin's MVs, just wait until you see and hear him and SHINee live. I love your reaction!! On the surface this song is about an abusive relationship but it’s much more tbh. The lyrics are based on Stockholm Syndrome and Taemin represents both the criminal and the victim. The criminal can be seen as either his old artistic image or his stage persona/publicity mask, while the victim is either his new “true” artistic identity he’s trying to create for himself or his real off-stage persona. His victim self is tied to his “criminal” self and sings about trying to break free but being overwhelmed/suppressed by the criminal side and losing himself.
