Update on the last story: The sister kicked her husband out of the house for "betraying" her, threatening to call the cops if he comes near her, and the parents are enabling her, which the OP thinks is an attempt to still be around their grandson. The husband is considering getting a divorce, but thinks the sister is going through some mental breakdown, and wants to get her some help. Ironically, the OP has been hearing rumours about how SHE'S the one going through a mental health crisis, not her sister, and the husband's family are furious.

Honestly, for the last story, the brother-in-law suspecting that 'Max couldn't have done it by himself (while still very clearly being on OP's side for helping with repairs) is very telling. 'Like he knew that his wife was likely involved based on what she said and who she is. I'm glad he's there and being at responsible with their kid and not just letting his wife get away with it . ...
