As an American who was once shot in the arm, I can confirm the accuracy of this. It was a through-and-through and I just ignored it (thank God for adrenaline) until the threat was handled and then I drove myself to a free clinic where I met 2 police officers and gave a statement while waiting to see a doctor. I was home, high on painkillers, an hour later.
