Ever since Season 1, the lizard league is talked about as if they're a D tier enemy. The Gaurdians obviously didn't want to go straight in and kill them, at least until they saw what happened to Kate. It was only at that moment they realized "Oh shit, this is real. Everything's on the line."

So idk if this is true or not but it makes alot of sense if it was. Someone looked at where rex was shot and apparently its the place that controlled his pain receptors. So he got doubly lucky he got shot in a place that wouldn't immediately kill him but it also got rid of his pain making him easily able to walk off what hes been through. I also remember a story about someone surviving getting shot in the head and he was just angry about getting shot in the head on the trip to the hospital
