Facts: Cat owners frequently believe cats are smarter than they are. 
Cats have trouble making thought association even when they would benefit from it. Their situation assessment difficulties made them have trust issues.
Dogs do not seek human approval. Dogs just have high emotional intelligent. They enjoy positive interaction (with many species, not only humans). Despite being a natural carnivore predator, just like cats, dogs are extremely emphatic creatures by comparison.
During the past 5 or 6 decades, I had 2 dogs and 3 cats. Cats are not dumb, but they're far from the intelligence level of a dog.
