Left vs right is the best way for power to hide the upper vs lower that's been going on the whole time...

@andrewdobson813

What a great video! In Britain the government benches are always to the right of the Speaker's chair and His Majesty's loyal opposition are on the left so where somebody sits has no permanent meaning.

@Howlingoutloud-m8

None to screw up, distort and twist terms like USA. Goes to show how easily manipulated the public is and how we got to this messed up time.

@mikenighbor4524

I would argue that liberal is now far right. Anything is either left or far right. I even jokingly use it in my directions sometimes.

@ÁngelArciniega-p2q

Thanks for the lesson, beauty teacher

@driftkid018

Great video! I'd never even thought about where these words originated from 🤯 so interesting to hear the history of them

@HossGreeley

FDR used "liberal" as a way to avoid describing himself and his party as "progressive".

@digaddog6099

When thinking of alternative models for political classification, its important to remember that the point is to filter out beliefs just as much as it is to filter in beliefs. The most nuanced description of beliefs is a manifesto, but we dont have the time for that. Additionally, the way we filter beliefs can favor one point of view to the other.

I think the best political classification system is whatever is currently supported by the poll data. At the moment, i think thata PEW research's political typology. It is a linear model, but it subdivides the line in a way which i think brings more nuance to the table than the political compass.

@Skill-GamePoker

great lesson❤

@nielskorpel8860

You don't need a tool. You don't need labels. They get used to lump people together and dismiss them without engaging with their ideas in depth and in serious contemplation.

Just use your words and describe your beliefs. In the current polarised climate, that gets you closer to commentary that takes politics seriously.

@spencerantoniomarlen-starr3069

Herbert Hoover did not take a hands off approach to handling the great depression at all.

@EnglishWritingTips

Now that we've examined the words "left" and "right," what should we do a deep dive on next?

@BondJames-vz5wk

I appreciate your videos, you make interesting points. The meaning of liberal has morphed quite a bit in the last 75 years or so.

@stephenhill545

The horseshoe model is  cool.

Isn't this the lady who appears in all the languagepod101/languageclass101 channels?

@Hollybalolly

I've long understood left and right to be umbrella categories that describe broad sets of ideals rather than specific policy prescriptions, and i think they're still somewhat useful terms if understood that way. Left wing ideologies tend to call for increased social and economic equality, while right wing ideologies tend to either promote systems that promote hierarchy or believe that certain hierarchies/inequalities are inevitable or natural. Both the left and right have tons of ideology that has diverse views on the role of the state and the specific outcome they're trying to achieve.

Ive seen a lot of political ideology tests, and they always seem to be biased and limited in scope. There will always be an incentive to make opposing ideologies sound unappealing, which leads to confusion and lack of understanding about what different sides want. Frankly, i think what we should have instead of traditional political compass tests is one that helps people identify their political interests, and then empowers people to figure out where they stand and what actions they should take based on this. Because there is a lot of propaganda that seeks to mislead people about what is actually in their political interest and i think that is the source of a lot of political division.

Excellent content here! I like what you're saying about building up vocabulary. What it made me think of is how there is basically NO vocabulary built up about "the middle". It occurs to me that it might do all of us a world of good to build up that vocabulary. What is the middle? Does it serve a function? What does it include, or not include? How many people would actually be much more comfortable in the middle if a middle were fairly clearly defined? Can we admit that there is such a thing as a middle, and that not everything is left or right?

It could really use a thorough and loud going-over if you ask me ❤

@nestorhernandezcruz6652

Hey Alisha. Glad to see you.
Are you still teaching English in Learn English 101?
What side do you stand on ? Left or right?

@philosophy-of-science-and-law

Great video, btw, and I think the present context of the left versus right false dichotomy is due the libertarian Nolan chart. Reagan openly admitted his desire to adopt libertarianism, conflating it as conservative, by contrast to what he also falsely understood from Eisenhower, that liberals would someday dress in the flag as fascist. So much plagiarism on the part of R.publicans, ever since their law lobby ALEC in 1971, preceding the end of the draft in 1975 when Reagan made his ridiculous statements that "liberals are fascists."
