Im Romanian and I've never tasted sarmale that way! We just make it simple, sour cabbage then stuff it with the meat and rice etc then when they're done you just put them in a plate with sour cream on. I love mom's recipe so much! She makes the sour cabbage herself!

As a British guy who visited Romania I can confirm, that sarmale are da bomb! They are delicious with mamaliga and smantana!

This dish looks similar to a dish we have here in Egypt we use cabbage and fill it with the same fillings but instead of pork we use minced beef (sometimes) and rice with parsley, dill and coriander with tomato sauce and we cook it in a cooking pot with vegetable stock and this dish looks so goodπ€€π€€π€€

Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia and Montenegro have also "sarma" ....it came with the ottoman empire. In Bosnia ist beef, otherwise it's pork and beef mix. Never lamb or goat. Christian can use bacon too and muslims "pastrma" (smoked beef) to enhance the winter feeling of that dish.

For sarmale we usually use sour cabbage, that is some type of pickled cabbage. Trust me, sarmale with sour cabbage tastes much better and has more flavour
