While Katanas were rarely used in wars, it was most certainly used in duels and battles where it was a major advantage over other weapons or if there were no other weapons available. Katanas were solely used as weapons afterall; but there was a time when Katanas were only used as weapons to behead someone practicing seppuku, or executions, so in that context, is was a sacred weapon used only for such situations. This was catalyzed by the fact that guns being more deadly at the time, made these swords not obsolete per se but utilized strictly for special purposes, purposes to bring honor to anyone the blade meets.
They started using katana's more heavily after 1277 the Mongolian invasion which this youtuber probably thinks did not happen either.
There is definitely some truth that Samurai were very proficient archers, horseman, and they adopted guns very quickly and eagerly when they were available, but the conclusion that Katana were ceremonial, weapons of last resort, or somehow shameful to use is absolutely ridiculous.
In a battle no, but in daily use yes. They use katana to protect themselves when they need to.
"How many swords do you want?" Date Masamune in video games : "yes"
Imagine the weapon you rarely used as last resort becomes more popular than your main weapons.
It really depended on the situation. There's tons of actual real stories of different samurai clans fighting each other with actual swords and even dying from them.. and not only that samurai would sometimes fight another samurai one-on-one using their sword!
It's just swords in general they are sidearms especially when armor is worn we as people just love swords
Yes, their main weapon was the yumi (long bow) but the Katona was not an embarrassment. The sword was the heart of the samurai and was considered a great honor to have. There was a special ceremony called gempku, when a samurai received his sword and only true samurai were permitted to carry them. They trained vigorously to become masters of the Katona and took great pride in their craft. What this video may be referring to was full military operations in an open battle. However, there were many types of conditions of warfare for a samurai. The samurai even had a smaller sword they carried called a wakizashi for indoor fighting and to committee seppuku, which was disembowelment of the stomach. They believed the soul resided in the stomach and thought so much of their blade that it was an honor to take your life with it, as well as courage and to avoid dishonor in life of any kind, as stated in their code of Bushido. So no, the Katona was not an embarrassment, but a symbol of power, honor and respect.
Samurai DID use katana. They just weren’t a main weapon.
That's interesting that's why Genichiro Ashina also uses bows with his sword in Sekiro
Yes they did…their standard katana was used as a last resort or in confined spaces, also, they regularly used odachi, tachi, nodachi etc. which are ALL classified as Katana, they are simply subspecies xD
I’m a big fan of samurai’s and there katanas🤩 . 🔥🔥🔥
They do use katanas the world’s best samurai users to swords, an actual sword and a katana so they do
Meaning, if it's not a katana, it would have been some other sword because I know there's a few different Japanese swords with the main difference between it and the katana being like size and length cuz they're all very similar to each other. As a result, why I could see the samurai using a spear and a bow under certain circumstances because they are the most proficient with a sword. It just makes sense that they'd use the sword more like unless there was a clear advantage to using a spear or a bow in which our specific circumstances they'd be using the sword. As for guns, well, they're relatively new and even when they did get implemented Japan they were still flintlocks. So a lot of them were used for defensive battles so they didn't actually get as much use as like bows or other weapons. Just because the guns had their weakness of taking a long time to reload. So there won't many people that made use of them outside of defensive battles
Yes they did, late sengoku Uchikatana, also katana is the word for the modern swords, a tanto and a naginata are both katana.
Depends on the context. On the battlefield they would be rarer since pole arms/bows are more effective for that. However in civil self defense or daily carry it's an entirely different situation.
Samurai's weapons are usually bows, naginatas (they are still sword) yari, magari yari, jumonji yari, sometimes also nodachi, bisento, etc. Katanas and other swords are for soldiers or swordsman usually.
While samurai were known to carry and be skilled with katanas, they weren't their primary weapon of choice in battle. Samurai primarily used bows, spears, and later firearms on the battlefield. The katana was more of a backup weapon, used in close combat situations when other weapons were unavailable or ineffective.
