Thanks for watching! We are excited to share this story about a family living off-grid on a remote island because it's one of those things that we think a lot of people have imagined doing. We think it's interesting to see what is required in terms of systems and services, and what some of the pros and cons are.

We collaborated with Katie and Jase to make this video about their island life not because it's an option that is accessible to everyone (we wish!), but precisely because it's so different that we found it really cool and unique.

Katie and Jase work really hard at everything they do, from raising a family and managing a resort to participating in the builds and creating YouTube videos – and they couldn't do it without the help of Jase's parents and the staff they employ from neighbouring islands who also work hard to make it all possible. They gave credit multiple times to their parents and staff in the video and we apologize if that wasn't immediately clear.

To address a few concerns we've seen in the comments:

-When they said it's just them out there, they had just mentioned everyone who lives on the island with them (including Jase’s parents and the resort staff) and what they meant by saying “it’s just us out here” is that there are no villages on Uepi Island and that the surrounding islands are uninhabited.

-Uepi Island has 50 staff who are on shift rotations so they are not all living and working on the island full-time or at the same time.

-The term off-grid means not being connected to an electrical power grid, which is different from being self-sufficient. We made sure to make the distinction in the video by including information about their off-grid systems, and also about how they do have to rely on importing certain things like diesel, some building materials, some food, etc. They are off-grid but not self-sufficient, and plan to convert to solar power in the next 12 months.

-The Uepi Island Staff are employed, paid, and very skilled at what they do, and to speculate otherwise is unfair and diminishes their efforts.

Thanks again for watching and happy exploring :)

Respect to this guys old folks. Must have been tough getting started in the 80's. Also, taken 40 years to get into a semi comfortable position. 1st generation to build it, 2nd generation to expand and better it. Hopefully the 3rd generation will not take it for granted, all the hard work that has been put in.

@berklia

I think his parent's story is probably more interesting & we would love to learn how they got there, their adventure & how they setup the original living situation as it must have been more of an adventure decades ago before the luxury setup was created for their son's family.

@Richiesrant

You guys are living a blessed life. Trust me you aren't missing anything good by being away from most people. I would live that life in a heartbeat if I could.

My husband and I live in a tiny mountain village at 9,000 ft - we too love our unusual lifestyle ❤ aren’t we all so fortunate to ❤living with nature where few other people want to or can live

@deecompe9406

I LOVE how he looks at her, AND their home! TY for sharing your journey!

@janinafisher101

What an extraordinary way for these kids to grow up. The more young people grow up away from the "built environment" and so called "civilization", while surrounded by all that nature provides, the better for our world. These kids will understand what is really valuable in life. What a blessing. And what a beautiful place... and the underwater life looks absolutely stunning!

@AUNTFRED

Wow! How extraordinary life to live. Their children are very fortunate.

@lwf3723

What a beautiful life you have created for yourself and children, that I would swap in a heartbeat.
You’re really not missing much in this horrible hectic world…
All the best ❤

@lindajones8253

The water is so clear. Great experiences for the kids too.

@buckbuchanan4902

What an amazing lifestyle! Beautiful family living on a remote tropical island, but with help from locals...perfect! Those kids are getting a far better education than 95% of kids in the world. They are learning about self reliance, nature, problem solving, etc.
I've had a fantasy since I was about 6, of being marooned on a tropical island and learning to survive, then thrive. Blue Lagoon was always one of my favorite movies, along with The Swiss Family Robinson and Cast Away.
I tried to talk some friends into going in with me on the purchase of an island off the coast of Australia, but they didn't want to.

@maryelizabethcalais9180

Awesome video. Lovely lifestyle. I'm 82 this year and would have so enjoyed your lifestyle.. Thanks for sharing.

@nasimajasat1093

The nearest Island life I've experienced is a vacation to tge Seychelles island....this place looks gorgeous and such an organic way of life for the kids...

@Ihavetwoearsandonemouth

So easy to be negative. But family money can be misused and lost. This family have added value to the family inheritance and respect the locals skills.
Good on them and wish them well.

@sailorcheri

16 guests max, and 50 staff. They aren’t alone😋 no knocking them tho. Sounds super fun!

@kevinyowait2463

Beautiful island.

That is the kind place to have a library full of books with less noise.

 I can read a book all day in a place like that.

Living with peace & tranquility of nature is better than the noisy Surburbs of an urban area.

🇵🇬👍

@empresse6105

Thank you for sharing your beautiful dreamy life guys. Love from Zimbabwe❤

@sandiegobiker

I'm in awe! what a beautiful life you got there as a family. Your children have so many wonderful experiences to share out there that not so many people understand or are aware of. What a blessed family life it is!!!!

@robyn7287

My goodness the comments about poor rich people, they are living a dream right now and I’d love to be part of it. Running a resort is not easy, managing that much staff is hard. Co ordination deliveries and services can be constant in the peak season. This lovely couple are giving you a chance to see beautiful side of their resort and what it would be like to be able to stay as a guest. So they have a nanny , if both parents work don’t they use child care. I personally think it was a beautifully put together video.thanks
