Kaworu being introduced so late is exceptional in anime and it is because he is not a "character", he is a blend between a subject with its own identity and an episodic antagonist like all Angels were. He acts as the "threat of the day" but also has a full personality and traits. Also, the reason you feel uneasy about him, and the reason that Shinji likes him, and the reason why he syncs at 100% with Asuka's Eva (with it being not even compatible for cross-testing as Misato said in other episode), and the reason why nobody detects he is an Angel is because during the episode he is turning down the AT field or the "barriers of his heart". Everything Kaworu says or does comes directly from his heart, which is something Shinji has simply not experienced before. Once he activates his AT field all the alarms go off, and also it is revealed both him and Ayanami have angel-like barriers.

If you are wondering what Kaworu represents, his angel name is said to be “Tabris, the angel of free will”. And in the end, Kaworu freely chooses his own death rather than the destruction of humanity. From your interpretation of Evangelion as an allegory for puberty and adolescence, and the angels as ideas which people fear, free will is an interesting one. Because if everything is predetermined, or you only follow the commands of others, your actions are simply part of a chain of cause and effect. But as soon as you have free will, you face the burden of responsibility. Which I would argue is the defining characteristic of adulthood.

Kaworu is perfect. His perfection, his openness (the same thing that gives him 100% sync rate) makes people connect to him perfectly, or reject him completely. He's one of my favorite characters in the series. (Lilin are humans, the children of Lilith (the apocryphal first wife of Adam), the Second Impact - Adam was the first, that gave birth to "native" Earth species, including humans. Angels are the children of Adam, as is Eva - taken from Adam's body, much as in the Christian creation myth).

The English title of the Song Kaworu (technically the (w) is obsolete and it's silent anyway) hums is "Ode to Joy" (if finishing Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, or "Joyful Joyful we Adore Thee" as a stand-alone hymn. Both Kaworu's physical appearance and the manner of how he appears are very similar to a (never completed, there are 2-3 versions) Mark Twain Story Called "The Mysterious Stranger". In which a youth appears in town to other boys, asks disarming questions, acts strangely, and answers to the name Satan.. Kaworu's shock at meeting "Adam" and realizing it's actually "Lilith" marks him and the angels by extension as the "side branch" of humanity, and therefore it's Shinji's duty and destiny to win and supplant them.

27:27 Funfact Kaworu was originally planned to appear earlier in the anime, specifically in episode 22. However, he was later moved to episode 24 due to several reasons during production (if I'm not mistaken). The translation of him saying he "likes" Shinji is "wrong" since netflix ended up censoring the original which was "love" in other translations (In some languages it was kept love). There are discussion about which word is best for the context but in all of them the meaning of the word used is more deep in a "I have feelings for you" way instead of a normal like in "oh i like that guy, he's a good person" for example. You are not wrong to think things happening very fast in a strange way like how fast Shinji trusted Kaworu and stuff, but this is because they had to cut a lot of what they wanted to do in the anime due to financial reasons at the time, which ended up removing a lot of stuff like this.

Thank a lot storieswithstyle. The Gainax studio ran out of money making episodes 25 and 26; for this reason, these chapters take place inside the characters' minds. The opposite happened in the movie The End of Evangelion, which I highly suggest watching because Gainax recovered of the money problem and presented the final episode of the series, which takes place in the outside world. Please like for Storieswithstyle be able to read this.

10:58 In japanese culture calling someone by their first name is very personal, you only really do it with friends and loved ones. Here Kaworu telling him to call him that instead of his last name Nagisa is basically saying that he wants to be his friend and/or get close to him, so it really is just Shinji being Shinji lol.
