I am riding a 2013 Tiger xc800. In 2018 a deer run into my way i hit it at about 85 km/h and i hit the ground hard. The deer was dead. The Triumph standard crashbar saved my leg. Shifter and brake lever was bent. I still can see the scratches in the tarmac my tiger left. I bent the levers straight, and put on some paint and that was it. Absolute nothing was broken on this bike. I can not confirm any of the complains in this video (maybe i am just lucky). I love my tiger :-)
That’s my biggest annoyance with modern bikes - the need to buy a whole assembly rather than individual components. It’s not very environmentally friendly for one thing and makes cost of insurance unnecessarily expensive
The plastic trim on the side of the tank is designed to be sacrificial, a drop or 2 and they are meant to be replaced. You can always get the 8 gallon safari tank. PS, it is top heavy even with an empty tank compared to a T7 and 1290 adv R with full tanks. For costs be glad it's not a polaris. Some of their ATVs have fuel pumps that go out, but to fix it you have to buy a complete $1200 fuel tank. My tiger is a 2013 and has 104k miles on it. It's great on the road, does fine on fire roads and if I want to get more serious offroad I have a dirt bike.
Nice video. There is not much left to be said! Regarding crash bars, I truly recommend Outback motortek. These guys are just amazing with what they do and they have addressed exactly the issues you have pointed out.
The Tiger is a bike I'm considering, so this is really useful information. Thank you!
I did get the Heed bars on my 14' 800xc, much better. I am older now and very tall, my off road days are over, I put some Scorpion II tires on it and now I just cruise it mostly, it is comfortable for my height and is really a fantastic road bike. One thing I do not like is switching the rider modes, PITA. 40k miles and counting... Great Video!
Sir, I absolutely love your honest reviews!
This is not an off road bike. It’s an adventure bike. That mean you could take some unpaved roads sometimes in your trip, doesn’t mean it’s made to go out to do hard off road. There’s so many better bikes to do this purpose you wanna.
Great video. Good points. There's a couple of other design flaws: The fuel filter is built into the fuel pump and cannot be replaced without replacing the entire unit. Also to change/clean the air filter you have to remove the fuel tank and some body work. Not a quick job when you're on a dusty road. It seems like they basically took a road bike and added adventure parts. Don't get me wrong I've had my 2016 XRT for 2 years and 60,000 Km and love it. It is such a capable bike on the highway, twisties and off-road. These are just niggles.
DOT doesn't allow for fuel tanks to be made of plastic for use on the roadway
Great video. I want to buy one of these for definitely more than "light offroad use" so your video is very helpful.
Thank you for this video and having bought an 800xca new in 2018, I agree with these 5. Related to the crash bars issue is the low and wide placement of the front turn signals. The Triumph upper crash bar design isn't strong enough to protect the turn signals, which will be broken in a tip over, along with the plastic fairing near the tank, as you mentioned. I agree the Heed bars seem to offer a better option, and note the new Tiger 900 has the front turn signals placed higher and inset, where they need to be on an offroad-focussed bike. Ride safe.
If they upgraded everything you said, you'd be bitchin about how expensive the bike was 😹😹😹
My 2017 is a thing of beauty with some SW-Motech engine guards that are a great upgrade over the stock ones
also had a broken lens on headlight. refused to pay 400, so i cut out the lens and glued on a "lens cover" in its place...also installed wire mesh guard after
Excellent review.Even"adventure bikes" are going to fall over, and they should bloody well be built to handle it.Watch the weight too,if ya'll cant get it back up then your adventure turns into a hike. All the best now,ya hear!
Great video! You may not know but actually you helped me a lot in my choice back in January! After long searching I stopped on Tiger 800 XCA, 3000 mile from February till now! I would add number 6 design problem.... the signal lights! I didn’t have the tank bar and dropped the bike from a stop position and the whole plastic frame around it cracked... anyway, absolutely love the bike and finally decided to start my own YouTube channel too! Great video as always! In the future can you give some tips on how to ride those big, heavy machines off-road? Newbie here!
The rigid plastic turn signals irritate the jeebus outta me. I had to replace the entire r/h front signal because someone brushed past it in a car park and snapped the damn thing off. The lamp and housing were fine, just the stem was cracked, as it ain't that strong. The design of the thing meant 70 bucks gone for something pretty simple.
2014 800xc__ What i hate is the master fuse/solenoid sits at the bottom of the sump and the turn signal's lenses aren't sold alone! wish the low fender had more space from the tire, the mud and gravel can and does lock up the tire. Taking off the tank is a pain in the ass with the lack of slack in the wires connecting to it( I extended mine a few inches ). You need a computer to balance your throttle bodies(actually this made it easy with the program). ABS sensors will get dirty and until they're clean you wont have ABS( possibly not even a speed reading). So far, my favorite bike!
