Shard is actually designed based on a character from the games. More specifically Metal Sonic 3.0 from Sonic Rivals 2. He was a Metal Sonic made by Eggman Nega to keep the other characters, including Metal Sonic, occupied.

Why only Mecha and Metal Sonic could go Super: Drive. They were the closest to living among Eggman's machines, who wanted to beat Sonic. And that drive allows them to harness the Emeralds like Sonic and Crew could. Metal has gone Super in the comics and I also believe in one of the shorts. Mecha showed personality in the Scrapnik Mini-Series where he gets to be redeemed.

Mecha should be able to use the chaos emeralds to turn super, as the master emerald is able to grant someone the ability to turn super, it's just not used at all

Okay so the reasons the robot sonics dont go super that often is because normally sonic or egg man are using the emeralds for themselves and the master emerald is on angel island which we dont go to often.

Metal Overlord is awesome and all, and definitely the better final boss, but purely on which design I like best it's Neo Metal Sonic hands down. He just looks so menacing.

In the IDW comics, Eggman became Super Eggman with a modified Phantom Ruby instead of the chaos emeralds

I know someone has said it but... Sonic 2 (GG and MS) came out a while before Sonic 2 (SMD/S-GEN). Also here's something not well known, Knuckles' Chaotix is simply called Chaotix Japan (BTW: the Kai in "Metal Sonic Kai means modified/altered in Japanese).
