Am I the only one who liked the time travel twist in age of calamity? I thought it was a jaw-dropping moment that was really well done. We still saw the events of the Calamity exactly play out until that moment.
I never understood the “not cannon” complaint. Like, it follows the canonical series of events right up until the point where we know everything that happened after. Changing the story where and when it did made sense to me. For those that wanted to see how the events lead to the events of botw, they got that. For those that wanted epic warrior-style battles in the end game with cool cinematics, well, they got that too. What AoC seriously lacked was post game content. The original HW had some really fun adventure maps that could be played after the story. Perhaps the next Hyrule warriors should have the good story mode like AoC where all of the characters could still be unlocked. However, for those who want to push each character to the limit and have specially designed levels to challenge players, an adventure mode would be excellent. Also, allowing players to unlock 4-star or higher weapons exclusively in adventure mode would be really fun. It wouldn’t take away at all from those who just want the story. They could still experience all of the characters and main content without ever having to do the adventure mode. But for those who wanted to keep playing and push the limits of each character, the next Hyrule warriors NEEDS adventure mode to return. AoC’s biggest flaw was late and post game content.
AoC can be a split timeline but from the get go it’s inaccurate to Botw’s history. I’m sure it says in some journals and notes in botw that Link pulled the master sword when he was a child but at the start of AoC he’s still just a knight in the army.
Thank you for saying honestly that the marketing for Age of Calamity was a lie. It really was, there is no other way to call it cause they've been way too explicit about the game being the canonical event of the war from 100 years ago. Yet if we played the game, we know that's actually not the case. When it released some people tried to defend Nintendo saying we should always have expected a non canonical game and it wasn't explicitely mentioned to be canon but that's not true. They marketed the game this precise way
The game’s story should also be like a prequel since the Imprisoning War takes place before the First Great Calamity and the events of Breath of the Wild.
I understand that people are cautious because of what they did with AOC but I don't think Age of Imprisonment will take place in an alternate timeline for few reasons: - In BoTW, there was no loop story. So for AOC, they simply split at a point in the story to start a new branch (Terrako's arrival in the past). They could have told us the original story of BotW's past. I think that's what most fans would have liked. It would have been a great tragedy. But right from the start they were mischievous, teasing us with sentences like “a new story...” - in TOTK, if Zelda travels into the past, it's because she found Rauru's Secret Stone at Ganondorf's Seal. The past is already written. In this past, Zelda will carry out the actions that will lead to Rauru's sealing of Ganondorf. If Zelda had the opportunity to change this past. Then she wouldn't be here in the first place. Because if they killed Ganondorf, she wouldn't find the Secret Stone, so she wouldn't be in the past. This is deterministic time travel. - What's more, the game is simply called "Age of Imprisonment". Why would they call the game like that if Ganondorf doesn't end up sealed ? - AOC has 18 characters in the base game. With AOI and what we know from Totk's past, we can easily reach those 18 characters. Link could be playable in the introduction (Like TOTK) and then be a playable character when you replay the missions. And let's not forget the new characters who may appear, as we've only had a few snippets from the past. - Nintendo have even announced that the game will tell the canonical story that would lead to TOTK. They used the term canon. Which wouldn't make sense if they were planning an alternative ending, because it couldn't lead to TOTK.
The amiibos aren’t really good evidence since they aren’t made for AoI they are specifically made for TotK. They are only described as giving Link new paraglider skins in TotK. And even have the label “Tears of the Kingdom” instead of Age of Imprisonment. Time travel also acts completely different in TotK how would Link, Zelda, and new sages get sent back to the present at the end of the game? What present would they even be sent to after drastically altering the past? That ending would be even more uncertain and bizarre than playing things straight. The whole point of Zelda turning into a dragon was because she could not just casually go back to her own time. I’m not saying things won’t diverge but time travel can’t work exactly the same as it did in Age of Calamity.
The statements they made about Age of Calamity aren't wrong tho. It's a split timeline set in the events 100 years before BOTW. Also like Age of Imprisonment can't be an alternate timeline based on how the story of TotK works.
Now that I think about it, it is true that the entire canonical Zelda timeline is built on a split of 3 alternate timelines. So I guess it’s totally on brand for this game to exist in an alternate timeline AND be canonical 😂 anyway, great video!!
Great video! I agree that AoC is cannon. I did not really question the new amiibo but you are so right.
AoC I believe is canon and actually explains a number of things in TotK, like Tulin's ability to use Revali's Gale (AoC actually shows him using a imperfect version of it, which shows just how much influence the Zelda Team had on the game in leaving hints for TotK within it), and also how the other Descendents developed their abilities (Sidon didn't seem to have the ability to control water in the BotW and Riju we never saw harnessing thunder herself without the Thunder Helm). The fact they wield the Champion's Weapons could also be as a way of respecting the Champions who helped train them/were role models to them. I personally would much prefer AoI to be an AoC sequel, considering that timeline still has a Ganondorf underneath the Castle rotting away. My main want would be for the AoC Champions to be brought back in time with Secret Stones and be made Sages. It would be so easy to do since AoC already has Terrako, and he'd likely try and send help to Zelda after she ends up stuck in the Distant Past. And who else better to send than Link and the other Champions? Seeing a Sage Revali would be too cool I feel.
For Age of Imprisonment, I hope the game takes sources from theTears of the Kingdom's Master Works such as the time Goddess Hylia entrusted the Zonai race with the Sacred Stones she had crafted. Kotake and Koume are important figures to Ganondorf’s character. Those two, including its own version of Twinrova, needs to be playable. Plus, we would’ve been more appreciated if Age of the Imprisonment can make the Ancient Sages more fleshed out than what they are portrayed in Tears of the Kingdom. And add layers to each of them since the Sage of Lightening may be the most compelling character of them all since she may be once served as Ganondorf’s most trusted lieutenant until she defects her former king. To see the Gerudo’s brutal and militaristic ways in this era would be something to dissect with if Nintendo can incorporated it to the game.
I'm going to be kind of the odd man out here.... I personally do not think AoC is cannon. The thing that tips me most over the edge is the fact that Nintendo hasn't made it Cannon yet, I'm still confident that they can end age of imprisonment and still keep it canonical. And I might also be an odd man out here LOL but I think that ending the game with sealing Ganon would be super cool! I do see your point though😅😂. My opinion is probably not shared by very many LOL. Great video love your content! ❤
Great point that the TOTK Amibos of the descendant sages are coming out later this year. Unless they coincide with the Switch 2 versions of BOTW and TOTK, they surely are going to market it them with the release of AoI which means we would have a double roster of sages (ancient ones and descendent ones from TOTK) which is what we had in AoC. As much as I want this to be true cannon and fully explain the events as it was described in TOTK, I truly believe they are going to have to change the story for the mere fact that they have to make Link playable and if they make link playable ( whether he comes back via time travel shenanigans or via some spiritual form) that already changes the story of TOTK. We have to remember that this is a spinoff Warriors game that is known for its large roster of characters to add more content to the game.
I’m sorry but what does canon mean actually because I know it means true events but like how does it mean that exactly? What makes it canon or non canon specifically? & Don’t tell me because time travel
I wondered if Age of Imprisonment will make King Rauru will make him an interesting and flawed character. From a naïve first King that he and his queen desires Hryule to live in Eternal Peace for generations to come to fully realize his ideals come at the cost of Sonia’s life when he did not take Zelda’s warning seriously. Thus, Rauru of more of a pacifist and the world can be too cruel to live up to something that is pure as conflicts will always be created. Ganondorf is more of the realism since he is determined to take control of all creations and reshaped to it’s original, barbaric landscape as he sees the land of Hyrule under Rauru’s region is flawed. The metaphorical theme of Idealism vs Realism where leaders/monarchs have different perspectives of how this country should be treated as to which Ganondorf wants to return to the land to it's rightful form. But my only concern is whether or not Nintendo of America can do better on the translations in the original Japanese source. In Tears of the Kingdom, English localization has robbed Ganondorf since the Japanese text have more in depth to his character and motivations. In addition, his resentment towards the Zonai. Ganondorf embodies the "survival of the fittest" mentality while he despises those in Hyrule whom lack a fighting spirit.
Yessssss if AOC can't be canon then no HW games can! Mwahahahaha!!!
Age Of Calamity is canon so what do you mean it's a lie it tells the story of the first great calamity before breath of the wild & it leads into an alternate timeline & all you have to do is look at it like this in one timeline the champions died & in one timeline they were saved.
