You can’t seriously tell me, a good number of people didn’t understand the context of the video: NATO was formed in 1949 due to distrust with the Soviet Union and communist Nations. There was legitimate fear that Soviets intended to start another war. Especially at a time where all of Europe and the world were vulnerable and recovering from a World War. Yes it is true, the USSR surprisingly asked to join NATO, however this was in 1954 right before the Warsaw Pact was announced. Simply put the USSR already had plans in place for a Pact of their own. They only tried to join NATO as a last ditch means to throw off any counter threat to whatever plans they had. While at the same time, having appropriate justification to create their own Pact if they were denied (which they knew they would be). Had they not asked to join, the formation of the Warsaw Pact COULD’VE been cited as a threat of Soviet ambitions by NATO.

In response to the questions "What was nato originally created for" The official NATO site answered: "In fact, the Alliance's creation was part of a broader effort to serve three purposes: deterring Soviet expansionism, forbidding the revival of nationalist militarism in Europe through a strong North American presence on the continent, and encouraging European political integration" So yeah, they tried to join NATO, but they didnt need to create a certain reason for the warsaw pact, it was already outlined in NATOs purpose.

As a matter of a fact.... Soviets never occupied anyone from the Warsaw pact... Those countries had their own armies on the side of Russia, with russian equipment, they were independent of the Russian military.
